I have a (casette) camcorder hooked up to my video capture card on my computer, and I'm using Ulead Video Studio 10. I just don't know which format and settings to capture the video/audio in. I want it good enough quality to look good, but that will produce video files small enough to fit on DVD. So far either I get great looking quality but 1 min of video is 1 gig, or a small size file that has horrid quality.

If you're going to burn a DVD video disc, it will convert to mpeg2 automatically. So you might as well start with that format. If you have the hard drive space, I'd capture at the highest quality, then do all the editing and only convert the final video. This way, you don't encode more than once which would lead to greater quality loss.

Capture at the best quality you can - buy a new disk drive if you must! DVDs are in MPEG-2 format, so in a way it doesn't matter what format you capture in as it's going to be converted anyway. However, you want the finished product to be as good as possible, so capture at the highest quality and let the ULead app do the conversion - it'll do a much better job than your capture card!
